What is de-colonization?

de-colonization can be a country or government moving away from the ruling power that set up a colony and authority – to become self governing, severing ties to a monarchy.

What is de-colonization for indigenous and non-indigenous people?

We look at de-colonization as way to shake free from the shackles of a system and society that was built with the colonizer’s interests as the focus – authority over indigenous people, resource extraction and economic benefit are some examples.

These goals drove the establishment of our government, education systems and more. From birth to school, to post secondary education – the system teaches us to fit into it, to follow the lead, to support the outcomes that maintain the authority and economic benefit of the colonizers.

what does being an ally mean?

As defined by Merriam-Webster : one that is associated with another as a helper : a person or group that provides assistance and support in an ongoing effort, activity, or struggle. a political ally.

More effectively today, we see an ally as a person or group that will take action or provide support and advocacy for those who face oppression, it is a lifelong process of building relationships based on trust, consistency and accountability with marginalized individuals and groups of people.
